Although Diachenko Kochman is primarily known for her clay sculpture, she initially trained as a painter while residing in New York City. She studied painting at the Art Students League and graduated from Fashion Institute of Technology concentrating on fashion design and painting.
After settling in Chicago, she resumed her studies, obtaining a BA in art education from Northeastern Illinois University and an MFA in ceramics from the University of Illinois in 1978. She has curated and juried many exhibitions and served as a member of the City Arts Grant Review Committee, Chicago Council on Fine Arts from 1983-1987. She is the recipient of a Permanent Collection Purchase Program Grant from the Illinois Arts Council (1984) an Illinois Governor’s Purchase Award (1986) and sculpture award from the Illinois State Fair Professional Exhibition Invitational (2003). Diachenko Kochman has exhibited widely in one-person and group exhibitions for over forty years.
Among her many commissions, she created a painting ‘Home in the Floating Meadow’ for the Shedd Aquarium’s Amazon Rising exhibition in Chicago. She was member of the art faculty at Dominican University, River Forest, IL from 1983-2007. Her work is found in numerous public and private collections in the United States, Canada and Europe.
