b. 1943 in Pidhaytsi, Ukraine
Lialia Kuchma was born in Ukraine and raised in Chicago, IL, amidst two dissonant cultures: Ukrainian traditions and Chicago reality. While growing up, creativity was always present in her life, and her family encouraged the study of art.
She attended the University of Illinois at Champaign and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1967. Following graduation, she focused on printmaking and did independent studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
She has worked in the disciplines of Ukrainian woodworking, large scale ornamentation, gold leaf application, printmaking, pottery, photography and calligraphy. In 1975, after a course in weaving, she realized that tapestry was the most fulfilling medium for her.
