Paul LaMantia trained as a commercial artist in the American Academy of Art in Chicago, Illinois, and subsequently worked as an advertising designer between 1958 and 1964. In 1960, he enlisted in the Army Reserves and upon his return to Chicago began taking art courses the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, Illinois. During this time, he exhibited in a few important group exhibitions such as the Institute’s Chicago & Vicinity Show of 1962 and Phalanx of 1965 at IIT. LaMantia eventually enrolled as a full-time student and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute in 1966 and his Master of Fine Arts degree in 1968.
LaMantia has been associated with the later Chicago Imagists and was subsequently included in the Chicago Imagism show of 1994 at the Davenport Museum of Art in Davenport, Iowa. He has had several solo shows at venues such as the Krannert Center at the University of Illinois in Champaign in 1977 and the Hyde Park Art Center in 1982.
