Dennis Lee Mitchell started his career as a ceramicist, and is best known for his sculptural work, which depicts disintegrating trees, created through a process of fusing and coloring bisque ware with a welding torch.
Recently, Mitchell has been working with smoke and paper to create smoke drawings. These drawings are semi-translucent and layered; sometimes they are fractured and reassembled. The forms are abstracted, and are often reminiscent of the body.
Mitchell is currently an Emeritus Professor of Art at Northwestern University. His work is exhibited, and in private and public collections, globally.
