In 1928, Howard Dearstyne studied at the Bauhaus in Dessau. He graduated in 1932, the only American to graduate with an architectural degree, and in 1993, studied privately with Mies van der Rohe. He returned to the United States in 1934 to begin work as an architectural designer.
Between 1941 and 1971, Dearstyne held a number of teaching positions, and he served as Associate Editor of Inland Architect, from 1967-68. A photographer, his work was published and exhibited widely.
