MAVerick Ensemble presents its second installment of the 2012-2013 season featuring Morton Feldman’s Durations works. Bringing an eclectic blend of contemporary music to audiences, this concert promises to feature works of varying styles from the dissonant work of Elliott Carter to the minimalist guitar music of Annette Kruisbrink. MAVerick will be featured at Bethel United Church of Christ in Elmhurst on Friday, January 31, and Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art on Saturday, February 1.
Feldman’s “Durations” series of works, which MAVerick will present the first two, are wonderful introductions to the music of Feldman. His music is known for its hypnotic soundworld. However, many of the masterpieces are lengthy one hour plus epic events which tend to frighten all but those who know his music well. The works on this concert provide an opportunity to experience the rich palette of Feldman’s work without having to commit to full evening.
Also, MAVerick is excited to present the work of Chicago composer Drew Baker. Drew Baker’s music has been described as “extremely inventive” while applying extra-musical ideas. We will be presenting his work Charon (2011), which refers to the boatman who ferries souls across the river Acheron to the shores of Hell. Baker creates otherworldly sounds to provide a fitting soundscape befitting Charon.
