UIMA’s Bead Studio Exhibit at Bead & Button Show

UIMA’s Bead Studio will be featured at the 2016 Bead & Button Show in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

June 10 - June 12, 2016

UIMA is very proud to announce that the museum’s Bead Studio will be featured at the 2016 Bead & Button Show in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

unnamedIn September of 2013, a group of women interested in learning how to bead traditional Ukrainian “gerdany” necklaces came together to form a workshop. Board Member Helen Pryma established this group at UIMA and invited master bead artist Nastasia Marusyk to lead the program. Marusyk is a designer member of the National Union of Folk Masters in Ukraine.

As early as the 17th century, Ukrainian women used beaded necklaces, bracelets, shirts and vests as a part of their traditional dress. Different geographic areas favored their own patterns and color schemes. Various symbols were incorporated to ward off evil spirits, and create peace and harmony. The genesis may be traced back to the times when decorative-utilitarian arts were being formulated and shaped by the ancient Slavs.

Among the first groups in the United States to dedicate itself to the preservation and popularization of Ukrainian heritage bead working, we are very proud and grateful to exhibit at the Milwaukee Bead & Button Show. The main purpose of the UIMA Bead Studio is to preserve and propagate the ethnic beading traditions of Ukraine in its past and present.
