Bridge #2 speaks to our valiant efforts to stay connected to others while living in varying states of isolation. Most of the wood I use is reclaimed pine from old barns and urban “tear-downs.” I value the history embedded in the material and repurpose it into sculpture. This older pine has much denser grain and strength than recently harvested pine. It often has interesting knots and variations in the grain. I start with boards that are more than one inch thick. My sculptures are built from multiple elements carved on a band saw and assembled into final form. Bridge #2 began with a plan drawing, but improvisation also played a role during the process of creation. My intent is to create a sense of energy and life with this wood that once was a living part of our landscape.
