Our New Relationship to the World We Live In. We live now in a world of very local boundaries that have implications both outside and inside creating an unease in those of us who do not fit anywhere or in a particular situation. Our new boundaries separate us from the rest of close humanity. At times we are neither inside nor outside. We try to reach the other side but can do so for only a limited period or task. On a positive side, Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian (1755-1794) wrote “It costs too much to shine in the world. How much I will love my retreat! To live happy, live hidden”. Many of us can do this successfully for short periods but can we all do this for 6 to 18 months? Boundaries change with experience, age, job, retirement, definition, etc. By the time I was in my early 40’s, I had moved fourteen times in several states and two countries. Life had no specific geographical boundaries. I was a career nomad but never a sense of loss or helplessness; however, there are those who have a sense of “...How can we create? How can we rejoice in our achievements? We are severed from the universe and do not realize that we stand alone in this world with no one to care for us...”.

We have an unease about our future and can feel an infinite emptiness. Some of my art is directed to these very issues: Neither Inside nor Outside portrays our immediate situation and addresses our very limited existence and fears of not knowing what lies within or outside the solid boundary of our home. I express the inherent aesthetics of science. My extensive travels in France and Asia bring additional influences. The art blends the organic nature of plants and animals with non-objective shapes and forms using found and new components. The pieces integrate the various key structural components of today’s society and pair the materials with unlikely opposites. My artistic mission introduces the public to information in a nontraditional context so they seek additional knowledge. The concepts emanate from multidisciplinary biomedical and artistic training. Each piece is designed to bring the artistic aspects of science into the realm of each person to awaken the inner scientist.
