The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA) preserves and promotes contemporary art as a shared expression of the Ukrainian and American experience. UIMA develops, utilizes and encourages artistic talent through exhibitions, concerts, readings, lectures and films to serve the cultural needs of our community and city, and thereby strengthen cultural understanding and diversity.

This award recognizes organizations with a deep commitment to preserving and defending the First Amendment rights of artists and curatorial efforts on behalf of those whose rights to free expression have been challenged.

Home Grown at the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art is an immersive exhibition exploring the deep entanglement between human and plant life, featuring Midwest artists working with natural pigments, dyes, plant reliefs, hand-pulled paper, and organic materials that include botanics, mycelia, and artist-made bioplastics. Home Grown serves as a green space within an urban environment, with thought-provoking, nature-focused work integrated into a landscape of live plants.

Many of the artists exhibiting in Home Grown are practitioners of bioregionalism. They learn and educate others on the specific history of native plants and local indigenous ecologies, understanding that humans, plants, and wildlife are mutually responsible for one another. Several of the artists exhibiting in Home Grown are members and volunteers of community gardens and greenhouses, and host educational workshops, field days, and stewardship events and programs within their local communities. They cultivate native plants, remove invasive plant species, and tend plants in ‘art gardens’ to create natural pigments and dyes, and to grow and harvest plant fibers for papermaking.

Home Grown Exhibition Tour took place July 11 - 18, as a mobile exhibition featuring a survey of artists currently showing in Home Grown Vol. III at the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA).

Jacques Hnizdovsky: Selections from the Permanent Collection

UIMA is proud to present an extensive selection of works by Jacques Hnizdovsky (1915–1985), one of the most celebrated Ukrainian-American artists of the 20th century, drawn from the Institute's Permanent Collection. Renowned for his masterful woodblock prints depicting cats, sheep, trees, and the natural world, Hnizdovsky's work is held in major institutions including the National Museum of American Art and Yale University. This exhibition brings together an impressive array of his prints alongside several rare paintings, marking the first time many of these pieces, including recent donations made over the past several years, have been on public view.

This exhibition is presented as part of UIMA's 55th anniversary celebration. It honors both a beloved artist and the Institute's long-standing commitment to preserving and promoting Ukrainian art and culture.
