Artist-Led Learning

The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art offers Artist-Led Learning programs including workshops, artist talks, panel discussions, paid internships with course credit (wherever eligible) and a Master’s course in curation offered through the Art Institute of Chicago, taught by UIMA’s head curator, Adrienne Kochman (PhD).

Curatorial Practicum: From Idea to Exhibition

Utilizing artwork from UIMA's permanent collection, students from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago will develop an exhibition from start to finish. What considerations do curators make in developing a concept to it's fruition as a physical exhibit? How is the institutional mission considered; how do curatorial decisions to include specific artists, works, artifacts, shape narratives and what are those consequences? For whom is the exhibition curated - the general public, art dealers, educators, etc.? The arrangement of objects in the gallery, displayed texts, talks, tours, artist workshops, etc. are all impacted.

Archivist interns gain practical experience working directly with UIMA curators and preparators. Interns assist with daily operations involving collections management, research, data entry, and maintenance. They also use their growing knowledge of collections management to support research, prepare correspondence with lenders and institutions, and update UIMA’s permanent collection documentation.

Administrative interns gain an understanding of non-profit museum operations while assisting the curatorial and development team with research, exhibition planning, and grant applications. Research and writing projects include exhibition labels, catalogs, web content, and blog entries for the UIMA website. Administrative interns offer additional support to the curatorial team in transcribing studio visit interviews, artist talks, and relevant conversations recorded by exhibiting artists. Transcribed text will be archived, and exhibition catalogs may include relevant interviews.
