Celia Greiner

I make sculptures primarily of wood, but lately, of wire and screen. My wooden sculptures explored shapes that were simultaneously attractive and repulsive, somewhat like sea creatures. I wanted them to appear soft and yielding and to have movement, despite being made of hardwood. My current work is made from wire and screen and does not deal with solidity and presence but with diaphanousness and subtlety. This pandemic has generated thoughts of how fragile we are and the fact that we can be taken down by something physically so small. We are porous and vulnerable creatures. I am using screen because it has more body to it than fabric but still has some drape and because of the weave it outlines itself when curved into a shape. It is delicate and transparent. I am treating it as a fabric and sewing it together to form simple shapes to explore the fragility, weakness and vulnerability our species is experiencing at this time. The stitching is meant to be crude as though temporary or a reparation. The insides are just as exposed as the outsides.
