On April 26, 1986, at 1:23 am, a failed test during a reactor shutdown caused a reactor meltdown of Unit #4 of the nuclear power station at Chornobyl, Ukraine, in the former Soviet Union. The accident and the fire that followed released massive amounts of radioactive material into the environment that spread throughout Europe and across the northern hemisphere, including Canada, United States, and the entire world.
