"Bodh" means to observe and to be aware. My work revolves around this basic idea. By observing matter in its elemental form as independent and in relation to self, my compositions try to resolve the condition of "non-dual”. Process, in my works, is the message. A medium is selected, preferably in its elemental form. Next, it is intimately prepared and rendered. Most often, the medium’s selection is intuitive; then comes the reason for choosing it. My current inquiries involve minerals and organic substances such as clay, calcium carbonate, carbon, turmeric, mulberry paper, natural fabrics and organic binders. Character of materials is investigated until an understanding arrives that informs its place and role. Hence, an unhurried sense of time is an essential factor in the process. Travels exploring some of the oldest schools of art, archeological sites, tribal arts, traditional weaving and other indigenous techniques serve as important influences. To me, these works carry a dimension of wonder and submission, use of ancient wisdom, creating a continuity of knowledge and pleasure drawn from age-old resources. My work, Sifr (meaning zero), for the CSI Biennial is an adaptation of work (see visual G Kumar Detail Site Specific Install LUNA at Edward Albee Foundation 2016) that was made as a resident at Edward Albee Foundation, Montauk, NY in collaboration with artist Kevin Benham. The work was called Luna and was an ode to the moon on a full moon night with each cone signifying each of the eight stages of the moon from new to full. Luna, in every way, was the beginning of using turmeric in its true form, in my practice. Sifr is the first sculptural work made in continuation to 3D works that have so far been made so far in this series.
