Patrick Caulfield

Patrick Caulfield was an English painter and printmaker, belonging to the Pop Art movement. Embracing the everyday, he was quoted saying that “[There is] nothing stranger than life itself.” Indeed, the theme of Caulfield’s work celebrates the mundane, rendered often as flat areas of bright color, sometimes outlined in black. Many of his works are dominated by a single hue. He is recognized for his still lifes and interiors, depicted in a graphic style.

He attended the Chelsea College of Art & Design in London, England between 1956 and 1959, and the Royal College of Art in London between 1959 and 1963. In 1987, he was nominated for the Turner Prize. In 1993, Caulfield was elected to the Royal Academy of Art, and in 1996, became Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
